Sunburn Prevention and Home Remedies

You can prevent sunburn with these home remedies.

  • You must avoid going out between 10 a.m to 4 p.m. It is because sun rays are strongest at this time. It is important for you to seek shades as much as possible. You should limit the time spent outdoor especially during the peak hours.

  • You should cover up your arms and legs with woven clothing. You can also have protection with broad brimmed hat. You can also use especially designed clothing or outdoor gear.

  • It is good for you to use sunscreen frequently. You should apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going in the sun. You can apply it again in two hours if it is washed away by water or perspiration. These sunscreens can be used on hazy or cloudy days.

  • You can also use sunglasses when you are out. You can choose sunglasses which can block 99% ultraviolet rays. You should choose glasses which can fit your eyes with wraparound frames blocking sunlight from all sides.

It is also good to use base tan to avoid sunburn. It can prevent you burning in sun with few indoor tanning sessions. It is good but not so effective for sun protection. There can be risks of outweigh with long term tanning as well.

Home remedies

You can do nothing to limit the damage to the skin in case of sunburn. You can reduce your discomfort and pain with the help of following tips in quick time.

  • You can use anti inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or aspirin in case of sunburn. You should use these medications regularly according to given instruction on the lable. Special care should be taken when aspirin is given to small children and teenagers. You should not give aspirin to the children recovering from flu or chickenpox. There is link of aspirin with Reye’s syndrome. It is always better to talk your doctors in case of any concern.

  • Apply the cold compresses on the skin like towel with cool tap water. You can also take cool shower.

  • You can apply aloe vera lotion, moisturizing cream or hydrocortisone cream to the skin. It can decrease pain and swelling to the affected area and it will also speed up healing.

  • You should not break the blisters as these blisters have body fluid and act as protective layer. The healing process can be slowed down by breaking blisters and there can be increased risk of infection. You can cover blisters with gauze if required. You can apply antibacterial cream if these blisters break on their own.

  • You should drink plenty of water because there can be fluid loss due to sun exposure through your skin. You can prevent yourself from dehydration as well with these fluids. It can be difficult for the body to carry normal functions if it doesn’t have water and fluids.

  • You should treat the peeling skin gently. The body will get rid of top layer of damaged skin very easily. You can use moisturizing cream in case of peeling.
